Considering a Career in Web Design?

Website designers and developers are responsible for the look of the website, but they are also responsible for the site’s technical aspects such as performance, capacity and how much traffic the site can handle.  Web developers may also be responsible for creating the content for the site. According to The Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the following are daily tasks of a website designer:

  • Meet with clients or management to discuss the needs and design of a website
  • Create and test applications for a website
  • Write code for the website, using programming languages such as HTML or XML
  • Work with other team members to determine what information the site will contain
  • Work with graphics and other designers to determine the website’s layout
  • Integrate graphics, audio, and video into the website
  • Monitor website traffic

Web designers must be able to create different types of websites for different types of clients.  They must know that gaming sites need to be able to handle advanced graphics while an ecommerce site would need a payment-processing application. The designer is usually responsible for knowing and choosing which applications and designs will best fit the site.

Web designers can work for a variety of companies. Most of them work with a computer systems company or design related services.  Around 16% off website developers are self employed and do freelance work.  Many times they are hired out by a company to design and run their website.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the career of website design will grow 13% from 2018 to 2028.  Ecommerce continues to expand and online purchasing is expected to grow faster than the overall retail industry. As retailers expand their online offerings, the need for web developers and designers will grow.

Websites can be built from anywhere in the world which provides a lot of flexibility in the work environment of a web designer.  Someone who desires to work from home, travels or is relocated often is ideal for web design. Military spouses can work from anywhere their spouse is stationed.  Many times, web designers have a lot of flexibility in their work hours as long as they get the website created by the deadline.  They are able to work evenings, nights and weekends if they desire.
