Teachers, parents and pretty much any adult I ever came into contact with as a child asked me that very important question we have all been asked and ask kids today: “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” In order of what I wanted to be from ages 3-18: truck driver, teacher, Nun (yes, I am not joking), Chef.

As military families, we are always preparing for something. Deployment, training, moving... you name it!

As I sit here this morning thinking about the very short time we have left of summer, my mind wonders and thinks about what will await us this new school year. How will we prepare for this new school year?

Whether you are a military spouse like me sending her kid off into the world or are preparing to go back to school yourself, or maybe both... positive thinking should be something that strives to be number one on our minds.

Mental illness affects 1 in 4 or 60 million Americans every year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The National Institute of Mental Health reports that while everyone occasionally experiences feelings of melancholy and sadness, these feelings usually pass within a couple of days. However, someone with depression will not only feel sad, they may feel other intense emotions such as helplessness or hopelessness.

When businesses hire military veterans, the workforce gains invaluable skills because of military training. As a veteran transitioning out of the military, you may have doubts about the type of jobs out there and whether or not you may qualify for it. Employers take on the job training such as military experience, but if you are looking in another field you have no experience in - there are options for you to obtain the training in that field in as little as 60 days and use your GI bill and tuition assistance in the process.

What you say to yourself is called self-talk. Controlling your self-talk is a very important part of living successfully AND achieving your goals.

Your subconscious believes what you tell it. In other words, what you say to yourself is your reality.

When you call yourself lazy or stupid, your subconscious thinks it must be true. Productivity and functioning suffer.

Replacing negative self-talk with positive self-talk allows your subconscious to be supportive of you and your intentions.

Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
